Fed: Paid maternity leave is affordable

Federal government costings reportedly show paid maternity leave remains affordable
despite the global financial crisis.

The Australian newspaper reports the Rudd government is weighing up the cost for the
plan ahead of the May budget.

The Productivity Commission has recommended working mothers be paid the adult minimum
wage of 544 dollars a week for 18 weeks.

Productivity Commissioner ROBERT FITZGERALD said yesterday the community could without
question deliver the scheme .. even amid the current economic problems.
