Qld: Ducks spared from hunting in Qld

Queensland's government has banned duck and quail hunting this year because of a dramatic
fall in the state's waterbird population.

Environment Minister DESLEY BOYLE says waterbird numbers have fallen from a million
to 200,000 in the past 20 years.

He says the decision to ban their hunting is based on science and fact, and it's aimed
at ensuring the long term sustainability of native species.

Birds Queensland conservation officer MIKE WEST says the government's made a wise decision.
