Voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly rejected $8 million in bonding to build a community center on the town-owned Clifton Common.
In two referendums, the voters turned thumbs down on $5 million for a community center containing a senior citizens center and community rooms, and $3 million for an indoor swimming pool.
The vote on the first proposition was 3,521 no and 2,776 yes. On the swimming pool, the margin of rejection was even heavier - 3,634 no against 2,668 yes.
Proponents of the center, including Supervisor Kevin M. Dailey, expressed both shock and dismay over the results. Dailey said the center appears to be a dead issue at least for now. …
