Qld: Call for extended suicide prevention strategies

Researchers from Brisbane's Griffith University have found that the suicide rate of males
aged 15 to 34 has more than doubled in the past three decades.

And they say suicide prevention strategies should cover the whole age group.

Comparing the suicide rates of 23 western nations, the team from the university's
Australian Institute of Suicide Research and Prevention has found that Canada, the United
States and New Zealand have suicide rates similar to Australia.

All four countries share characteristics of European migration, a comparatively short
history, geographical isolation and climatic extremes.

Reporting their findings in this week's Medical Journal of Australia, the researchers
conclude that a better understanding of cultural influences could help ease the problem.
