Fed: ABC to split managing director's responsibilities =2

The division will free up the new ABC boss to focus on news and programming, after
disappointing television ratings this year and the dumping of new programs Media Dimensions
and Dimensions on the Move after only a few months.

Mr McDonald said the move was not unprecedented and would produce a more streamlined
top level management and reduce the number of reports to the managing director.

He said he was delighted Mr Balding had agreed to take on the new deputy's role.

"In his six years with the ABC, Russell has provided highly distinguished leadership
to the corporation's funding, finance and support services functions, making him an outstandingly
suitable appointee for this new position", Mr McDonald said.
